On a mid-August evening, nearly 200 ukulele players on at least four continents (North America, South America, Europe and Australia) met up virtually to play music and sing songs, in pandemic-style togetherness, keeping the ukulele kindred spirit going strong. As the Austin Ukulele Society’s virtual meeting got started, everyone had a great time catching up over the live chat and seeing a cool photo of Bob’s grandpa playing ukulele in 1930. Bob then shared some local ukulele news, including a recap of our recent fundraiser for Kick Butt Coffee, and we launched into our warm up song (Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.”)
Next, Bob performed his lovely arrangement of “Tin Pan Alley Medley No. 4” to demonstrate what we’d be learning to strum and sing. He led the group through helpful exercises, getting us comfortable with the tempo, chord progressions, and strum pattern. Bob answered some questions that Jen and Lyda fielded to him, and when we were feeling ready, we played the medley through a couple of times (with thundering applause at the end). π Before we parted ways, we played Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again.”
Thank you so much to Bob Guz for his excellent teaching, Lyda Guz for managing the presentation slides and Jen Richardson for moderating the live comment/chat feed.
