A visit to the 2012 Lone Star Uke Fest

Debbie PorterThe 2012 version of the Lone Star Uke Fest happened on June 1 and 2 in Dallas at the Bath House Cultural Center, an arts facility owned by the city. If you went to either of the earlier Lone Star fests, this one, organized by “Ukulady” Noel Tardy, was a good deal smaller. Instead of the big roster of teachers and performers at the previous fests, this year there were three–east Texas singer Debbie Porter, the “Play Ukulele by Ear” impresario Jim D’Ville, and Austin’s own Pops Bayless.

Friday evening was basically a big open mike, along with a singer / songwriter competition. On Saturday 6/2, there were basically two morning sessions, one for beginners and thePops Bayless other for “intermediate / advanced” players. Debbie and Pops switched off for these. Each one of their classes was intended for one level or another, but everyone took part in every class. Debbie shared lots of performance tips for “open mike” singers on all levels–most notably how to phrase a song, and importantly, how to determine which key is correct for you, as many folks sing too high or too low. Pops had everyone playing the blues in a matter of minutes, and then shared the best way to play the blues on a uke.

Jim D'VilleJim D’Ville did his “Play Ukulele by Ear” class and jam throughout the afternoon. His message, delivered very much in the style of a musical stand-up comic, was for every player at every level to “throw away the book”–in other words, lose the notebook many ukers carry to meetings or performances with all their favorite song sheets inside. Instead, Jim showed us all the 1 – 4 – 5 musical form of an average rock / folk / pop song (not all songs follow it, but most do) and how to figure it out without having to look at sheet music.

The three teachers, along with Texas novelty band the Wahooligans, performed Saturday evening. It was all lots of fun, worth the three-hour drive in each direction, and highly recommended if they hold another one next year. –from Walter

Here’s the June meeting song–“Sway”

There’ll be one new song introduced at the June 14 meeting–“Sway,” a Latin music classic. Be prepared to get your rhythm on.

Below is the live Michael Bublé version of the song, which is a good guide to the beat and melody. It’s even in the right key to strum along with–until the last verse modulates into a higher key, which we’re not going to do. And instead of a big band & a trombone solo, imagine many ukuleles:

Have fun! Remember, on Thursday, June 14 we’ll be meeting 7:00 – 8:30pm at the Memorial United Methodist Church, at 6100 Berkman Drive (Austin, TX 78723).

Revised version of Margaritaville

The version of “Margaritaville” that we posted in the Ukulele Music Library was not the same one that Bob used at the meeting. “Margaritaville” in the revised version had tabs that allowed the player to pick out the famous “dee dee dee DEE dee” instrumental phrases. Folks have been asking since then for the revised “meeting” version–so, by popular demand, the revised version is now in the UML for you to download.

Yet another AUS performance–or is it a flash mob? Or…?

The AUS has been offered another chance to perform in public, believe it or not! And you can join us. This time, the performance will be at the Hill Country Galleria Amphitheater, on Saturday, June 23, in Bee Cave, where Latin musician/singer Patricia Vonne (who includes the uke among the instruments she plays) is performing. If you haven’t heard of her before, she’s well known in Latin music circles, plus she’s the sister of director Robert Rodriguez — (Spy Kids, Sin City, etc.). There will be a break in the concert around 8 p.m., during which time, we will get up and play three or four songs from our repertoire, and Vonne will come onstage to join us. It’s sort of a performance / flash mob.
There will be an official email announcement coming soon, with the opportunity to RSVP if you’re interested in participating, and/or getting more details. At the end of the June 14 meeting (8:30 p.m.), we’re hoping that folks who are participating will hang around to run through a quick practice. (We’re no longer accepting additional participants.)

Our May 10 meeting–in which we try out our new place

We tried our our new home for our May 10 meeting–a big room just off the gym at the Memorial United Methodist Church on Berkman Drive in east Austin. Everyone who was there–and it looked as if there were about 30 of us–seemed to feel that it was a pretty good spot for a meeting. After cramming ourselves into the Community Room at Central Market North for our first 16 months as a group, at last we had some room to spread out.

Bob had prepared three new songs for us. The first was the Jimmy Buffett classic “Margaritaville” (which, we learned, was reputedly written in Austin), and Bob taught many of us who aren’t pickers how to pick out the introduction on our two middle strings. We also performed a medley of two Buddy Holly songs–“Everyday” and “Rave On.”

And then came the solo performances. We thank Steven, Tim, Gary, Ian, Jack, and (yours truly) Walter for entertaining us with a widely-blended mishmash of music–everything from rock to clawhammer. All of the audience–even when they don’t perform themselves–make the performances friendly and special. We encourage everyone to try it at least once.

Jen brought in our big box of AUS-logo fundraising T-shirts, and sold many of them. Our supply is rapidly disappearing, so if you want one, now is the time to drop us a line at austinukes@gmail.com (and the shirts, in whatever size you request, are $20 each). They’re really comfy and classy.

Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled, once again, at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Berkman Dr., for Thursday, June 14, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Hope to see you then.

Our logo… we’re still trying to include it

We have a great new logo (see above, if you’re looking at our regular blog page), but haven’t quite figured out how to make it fit correctly yet. It’s coming soon (we may need to redesign our page)… but isn’t it cool?

Oh, and don’t forget our upcoming meeting on Thursday, May 10, 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church, at 6100 Berkman Drive (Austin, TX 78723). See you there!

May meeting is May 10 at a new location

As announced earlier, the AUS is moving to a new location–we will no longer meet at Central Market. We will meet Thursday, May 10, 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church, at 6100 Berkman Drive (Austin, TX 78723) – it’s just southeast of where I-35 and US-290 connect, and a few blocks east of Cameron Rd.  Google will give you good directions from any part of town.

When you arrive, please pull into the ‘enter only’ parking lot on the north side of the church – you can park in any spot not designated for staff.  Park just beyond the covered driveway near the front entrance of the church.  Please try to arrive a few minutes before 7 if you can.

We’re all looking forward to playing some new tunes on the ukulele – in fact, we have three new tunes for the month of May!  One of them is the beloved Margaritaville from 1976 by Jimmy Buffet.

The other two tunes are co-written by a Texan with a museum dedicated to him in Lubbock – Buddy Holly.  We know we sound great doing oldies, so why not add a couple more?  The dual-song medley Everyday – Rave On is attached, in the same PDF document.

As usual, we’ll play some songs from our repertoire and also have an ‘open mic’ section near the end for those of you looking for a warm audience.

If you’ve requested to buy a t-shirt, please bring $20 (per shirt) and we’ll get you squared away!
